ASST DIRECTOR - DATA ENGINEERING

Position Overview:

The Asst Director - Data Engineering, will be responsible for continuing to build and manage a high-performing Data Engineering team. The Asst Director - Data Engineering is responsible for the implementation of the data management strategy and execution of database engineering solutions for the organization, should have a strong technical background. This person will be responsible for execution of data engineering, data lake and analytics projects and ensures close coordination with the business and associated stakeholders.

All duties are to be performed in accordance with departmental and The Venetian Resort’s policies, practices, and procedures.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage and lead database engineering resources encompassing multiple functions (Database Development, Data Warehousing, operational data management, database administration) in an agile environment and work cross-functionally in the design and implementation of database solutions that are aligned with company strategies to achieve business goals.
  • Develop strong working relationships with functions across the organization to identify and vet Data and Analytics related priorities based on key business requirements and incorporate them into data engineering plans.
  • Responsible for on-time delivery of projects, through creating a framework of accountability, and continuously optimizing your team’s performance by promoting a culture of excellence, where best practices and industry standards are the norm.
  • Help improve engineering practices to increase velocity, productivity, and developer happiness.
  • Identifying, designing, and implementing internal process improvements including re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, optimizing data delivery, and automating manual processes.
  • Design, maintain, and troubleshoot robust data pipelines to ingest, process, and analyze large volumes of data from various sources.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders including data, design, product, and executive teams and assisting them with data-related technical issues.
  • Articulate tactical roadmap & initiatives based upon business need and overarching strategies to help scale quickly and sustainably.
  • Coach, mentor, and further grow and develop engineers on your team.
  • Participate in architecting and implementing scalable and secure data infrastructure solutions.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Establish data governance practices for managing various types of data, including personable identifiable information, data quality and validation standards.
  • Establish a unified database engineering methodology across database engineering functions.
  • Promote a culture of teamwork and collaboration within the database engineering function and across the organization in support of the mission and vision of the organization.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders including the Executive, Product, Data and Design teams to support their data infrastructure needs while assisting with data-related technical issues.
  • Staying current with the latest developments in data engineering and data management technologies and best practices and providing guidance and mentorship.
  • Collaborate with data scientists to support used algorithms and analytics.
  • Help Implement and manage security controls to ensure data access aligns with organizational policies and user roles.
  • Engage in professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 21 years of age.
  • Proof of authorization to work in the United States
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, business administration, finance, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Nevada Gaming Control Board registration and any other certification or license, as required by law or policy.
  • 4+ years of experience leading and managing teams in a similar position.
  • Deep understanding of data modeling, ETL/pipeline processes, data warehousing concepts, and best practices in data management and analytics.
  • In-depth working knowledge and demonstrated hands-on experience building out data marts, data warehouses, data lakes using modern architecture concepts (e.g.: Medallion architecture).
  • Experience with Cloud Technologies (e.g.: GCP, AWS, Microsoft Azure, Databricks, Snowflake).
  • Advanced proficiency with SQL, Big Query, and cloud systems.
  • Hands-on experience working within an enterprise-scale Data Platform, while setting best practices for security, privacy, monitoring & alerting, and CI/CD (ideally with Google Cloud Platform, Airflow, Databricks, and Tableau).
  • Experience managing cross-functional requirements in an agile environment, driving them to their full potential.

  • Knowledge of ETL processes and tools for data transformation and loading. (e.g., Alteryx, SSIS, Dataflow, Informatica, etc.).

  • Demonstrated abilities to lead and positively influence teams, develop talent, and lead by example.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical abilities.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving technical skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both in spoken and written form.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with guests and other Team Members of different backgrounds and levels of experience.
  • Must be able to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
